- You should have access to Google Analytics (or a similar analytics tool) for tracking the UTM parameters.
- Familiarity with basic marketing concepts such as traffic sources, campaigns, and UTM parameters.
Steps
Creating links with UTManager is simple and you have options.
- Generate one-off links or a group of links manually, see our quick start guide.
- Generate a one or more links from a Template.
Common Use Cases
- Social Media Campaigns: Track how well your posts on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are driving traffic to your website using UTM parameters for each platform.
- Email Campaigns: Use different UTM parameters to differentiate traffic coming from email newsletters or promotional blasts.
- Paid Advertising: Compare the performance of Google Ads, Facebook Ads, and other PPC campaigns by analyzing the UTM-tagged links.
Common Pitfalls/Troubleshooting
- Duplicate UTM Parameters: Ensure you aren’t using the same UTM parameters for different campaigns, which can cause confusion in your tracking.
- Broken Links: If the UTM link isn’t working, check for typos or invalid characters in the URL.
- Misaligned Data: If UTM traffic isn’t showing up in your analytics tool, make sure the UTM parameters are correctly tagged and that you’re tracking the right properties in Google Analytics.
Advanced Usage
- Custom UTM Templates: For frequently used UTM tags, set up custom templates to speed up link creation and ensure consistency across campaigns.
- Bulk UTM Generation: Generate multiple UTM links at once for large campaigns involving multiple channels.
- Consistency in Naming Conventions: Use standardized naming for your UTM parameters (e.g., always use lowercase and underscores) to avoid data discrepancies.
- Use Unique Campaign Names: Ensure each campaign has a distinct and descriptive name to easily track performance.
- Keep UTM Parameters Clean: Avoid using unnecessary or overly complicated parameters that make URLs too long or hard to understand.
